For the installation that occupies the gallery’s Projects Room, Moisés Patrício brings together the Brazilianities series on a more intimate scale. Still conceived around the Brutalist concrete that partially covers the quartinhas [small ceramic receptacles used in Afro-Brazilian religions] and other vessels, Patrício now incorporates gold to coat and honor receptacles associated with care and offering, the circulation of axé, and the preservation of life. Understood by the artist as an archaeology of the present, these sculptures are presented as small monuments to the continuity of Afro-Brazilian traditions and forms of knowledge that endure despite the systemic erasure engineered through colonization.
